Bearberry Powder
Bearberry powder is made from the dried leaves of the bearberry plant (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi), a small evergreen shrub found in northern regions of Europe, Asia, and North America. It has been used in traditional herbal medicine for centuries, especially for urinary tract health.
Bearberry Powder is produced by drying and grinding bearberry leaves. Has a slightly bitter, astringent taste due to its tannin content. Most often used in herbal teas, extracts, or capsules rather than as a culinary ingredient.
Active Compounds
- Arbutin → The main active compound; converts into hydroquinone in the body, which has antimicrobial effects in the urinary tract.
- Tannins → Astringent, help tighten and tone tissues.
- Flavonoids → Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.
- Ursolic acid → Linked to antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects.
Traditional & Medicinal Uses
- Urinary Tract Health
- Traditionally used for urinary tract infections (UTIs), cystitis, and kidney health.
- Works as a natural antiseptic for the urinary system.
- Astringent Uses
- Taken for diarrhea or intestinal inflammation.
- Used topically in poultices for minor wounds and skin irritation.
- Skin Lightening (Topical)
- Arbutin is widely used in cosmetic products to reduce hyperpigmentation and dark spots.
✅ Preparation & Use
- Tea/Infusion → 1tsp bearberry powder steeped in hot water for 5–10 minutes (often blended with milder herbs to balance bitterness).
- Capsules/Tablets → Standardized extracts available in herbal supplements.
- Topical → Added to skincare formulations for pigmentation issues.
Safety Notes
- Not recommended for long-term or high-dose use — hydroquinone can be irritating to the liver and kidneys in excess.
- Should be avoided by pregnant and breastfeeding women.
- Works best in an alkaline urine environment (so often paired with alkaline foods or herbs).
Always check with a healthcare provider before using for UTIs — sometimes antibiotics are required.
