Sarpagandha Root Powder
Known as “Indian Snakeroot”, it was a key discovery in modern medicine — reserpine extracted from Sarpagandha was one of the first drugs for high blood pressure and mental disorders in the 20th century.
In Ayurveda, it has been called “Chandrika” (moonlight herb) because of its cooling and calming effect on the mind.
Sarpagandha Root Powder is a commonly available herbal form of this important Ayurvedic plant.
- Made by drying and finely grinding the roots of the Rauwolfia serpentina plant.
- Used in Ayurveda and Unani medicine as a nervine tonic (supports the nervous system).
- Easier to consume than the whole root (can be taken with water, milk, or honey, or made into herbal tablets/capsules).
Traditional Benefits of the Powder
✅ Hypertension (high blood pressure): Naturally helps lower blood pressure by calming nerve impulses.
✅ Insomnia: Traditionally prescribed to improve sleep quality and reduce restlessness.
✅ Anxiety & Stress: Acts as a sedative, calming the nervous system.
✅ Mental health: Historically used in the treatment of hysteria, paranoia, epilepsy, and schizophrenia.
✅ Snake & insect bites: In folk medicine, applied externally or taken internally (with caution).
Key Active Component
- Contains Reserpine, a strong alkaloid responsible for its sedative and antihypertensive effects
- Because reserpine is so powerful, the powder must be taken in very small, controlled doses.
Dosage (Traditional Ayurvedic Guidance)
- Generally, 250–500 mg of Sarpagandha root powder per dose, once or twice daily, with milk or honey.
- Sometimes combined with other herbs like Brahmi, Jatamansi, or Ashwagandha to balance its potency.
(Note: Exact dosage should always be decided by a qualified Ayurvedic doctor.)
Precautions & Side Effects
- Overuse can cause excessive drowsiness, nasal congestion, depression, stomach irritation, or dangerously low blood pressure.
- Should not be taken during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Not recommended for people with ulcers, asthma, kidney problems, or severe depression.
- Always use under medical supervision — this is not a “mild herb,” but a potent medicinal root.
