Molasses
Molasses is a thick, dark syrup that’s a byproduct of the sugar-making process from sugarcane or sugar beets. After sugar crystals are extracted, the leftover liquid is boiled down into molasses. It’s rich in minerals, has a robust flavor, and is used in cooking, baking, beverages, and even natural remedies.
Types of Molasses
- Light molasses – From the first boiling; sweeter, lighter in color and flavor.
- Dark molasses – From the second boiling; stronger flavor, thicker consistency.
- Blackstrap molasses – From the third boiling; darkest, most nutrient-dense, but slightly bitter.
Nutritional Properties (especially blackstrap)

- Source of B vitamins (especially B6).
