Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (MAP) is a stable, water-soluble derivative of Vitamin C used in cosmetic formulations. Unlike pure Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), which oxidizes quickly, MAP is much more gentle, long-lasting, and suitable for sensitive skin, while still providing skin-brightening and anti-aging benefits.

What is MAP

  • A Vitamin C derivative: ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) bound with magnesium and phosphate.
  • Cosmetic grade → purified and safe for skincare applications.
  • Known as one of the most stable forms of Vitamin C in water-based products.

Properties

  • Appearance: White to off-white crystalline powder.
  • Solubility: Water-soluble (pH range 6–7 is ideal).
  • Stability: Much more stable than L-ascorbic acid → doesn’t oxidize as fast.
  • Skin Feel: Non-irritating, even for sensitive skin.

Benefits of Skincare

Skin Brightening

  • Inhibits tyrosinase enzyme → reduces melanin production → lightens hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and melasma.

Anti-Aging

  • Stimulates collagen synthesis, improving skin firmness and reducing wrinkles.
  • Protects against photoaging from UV damage.

Antioxidant Protection

  • Neutralizes free radicals → slows down skin aging.

Gentle on Skin

  • Much less irritating than pure Vitamin C → suitable for sensitive and acne-prone skin.

Common Cosmetic Applications

  • Brightening serums
  • Anti-aging creams
  • Sunscreens (as an antioxidant booster)
  • Spot treatments for pigmentation
  • Hydrating lotions (paired with hyaluronic acid or niacinamide)

Recommended Usage Levels

  • 1–10% in formulations (3–5% most common in serums/creams).
  • Works best in water-based formulations at a pH around 6–7.

Safety & Precautions

  • Very safe and well tolerated (less irritation than ascorbic acid).
  • May lose potency if stored in hot, humid conditions → store in airtight, cool, dry container.
  • For external use only (not edible).
