Cassia Seed

Cassia seed is a medicinal herb, not a spice. It’s mainly used in herbal teas and remedies for digestion, liver support, and eye health — very different from cassia cinnamon.

Cassia seed is quite different from the cassia cinnamon we just talked about. Even though they share the name “cassia,” they come from different plants and are used in different ways.

Cassia seeds come from the plant Senna obtusifolia or Senna tora, sometimes called “sickle senna” or “sicklepod.” They are small, brown seeds (resembling coffee beans, but much smaller). Unlike cassia cinnamon (the bark of Cinnamomum cassia), cassia seeds are used mostly in traditional medicine and teas, not in baking.

Nutritional & Herbal Profile

Cassia seeds contain compounds like:

  • Anthraquinones (responsible for mild laxative effects).
  • Flavonoids & polysaccharides (antioxidants).
  • Amino acids and trace minerals.

✅ Health Benefits (Traditional Use)

Cassia seeds are widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. Commonly believed benefits include:

  1. Eye Health
  • Used in teas for improving vision and reducing eye strain (especially from long screen use).
  1. Digestive Aid
  • Mild natural laxative effect → helps with constipation.
  1. Liver Health
  • Thought to support detoxification and balance liver function.
  1. Blood Pressure & Cholesterol
  • Some studies suggest cassia seed tea may help regulate blood lipids and lower mild hypertension.

Things to Watch Out For

  • Laxative effect: Too much cassia seed tea can cause diarrhea or stomach cramps.
  • Not for everyone: Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid it.
  • Not the same as cassia cinnamon: Don’t confuse them in recipes!

How to Use Cassia Seeds

  • Tea: The most common use. Slightly bitter, earthy flavor. Often combined with other herbs (like chrysanthemum) for balance.
  • Roasted cassia seeds: Sometimes used as a coffee substitute.
  • Capsules & extracts: Sold as supplements for digestion and detox.
