Lime Oil
Lime oil is a refreshing citrus essential oil prized for its cleansing, uplifting, and antimicrobial benefits. In cosmetics, it’s used in soaps, scrubs, lotions, shampoos, and aromatherapy blends. Steam-distilled lime oil is safer for skincare, while cold-pressed lime oil carries phototoxic risks.
🔹 What is Lime Oil
- Essential oil obtained from the peel of lime fruits (Citrus aurantifolia).
- Extracted by either:
- Cold-pressing the peel (retains more nutrients but is phototoxic), or
- Steam distillation (less phototoxic, commonly used in cosmetics).
- Known for its zesty, refreshing citrus aroma and wide use in aromatherapy, skincare, haircare, and natural cleaning.
🔹 Key Constituents
- Limonene (50–65%) → cleansing, uplifting scent.
- β-Pinene, γ-Terpinene → antimicrobial, energizing.
- Citral (Neral + Geranial) → sharp lemon-lime aroma, antibacterial.
- Flavonoids & coumarins (in cold-pressed oil) → antioxidants, but contribute to phototoxicity.
🔹 Cosmetic & Aromatherapy Benefits
1. Skin Care
- Cleansing & toning → great for oily and acne-prone skin.
- Brightening → helps improve dull complexion.
Must be well diluted; cold-pressed lime oil may increase sun sensitivity (phototoxicity).
2. Hair Care
- Refreshes scalp, helps reduce dandruff.
- Adds shine and a citrusy freshness to shampoos.
3. Aromatherapy
- Mood booster → uplifting, reduces stress and fatigue.
- Air purifier → antibacterial and deodorizing properties.
4. Other Uses
- Soaps & candles → fresh citrus fragrance.
- Natural cleaning products → antimicrobial action and fresh scent.
🔹 Safety & Usage
- Dilution: typically 5%–2% in topical cosmetic products (3–12 drops per 30 mL carrier oil).
- Phototoxicity risk (cold-pressed type): avoid sun/UV exposure for 12–24 hours after application.
- Steam-distilled lime oil → safer for skincare, less risk of sun sensitivity.
- Store in a dark glass bottle, a cool place (lime oil oxidizes quickly).
🔹 Cosmetic Grade vs. Food Grade
- Cosmetic Grade → formulated for skincare, aromatherapy, and topical use.
- Food Grade → tested for ingestion, used as a flavoring agent in beverages and foods.
