Lemon Oil (Cosmetic Grade)
Lemon oil (cosmetic grade) is a refreshing, uplifting essential oil used in skincare, haircare, and aromatherapy for its brightening, cleansing, and mood-boosting effects. Always dilute before use and be mindful of sun sensitivity due to its phototoxic nature.
🔹 What is Lemon Oil (Cosmetic Grade)
- Extracted from the peel (zest) of Citrus limon fruits, typically by cold pressing.
- When labeled “cosmetic grade”, it means the oil is specifically processed and tested for safe use in topical formulations and personal care products, but not intended for ingestion.
- Valued for its fresh, uplifting citrus scent and skin-brightening, cleansing properties.
🔹 Chemical Composition (Typical Profile)
- Limonene (60–75%) → antioxidant, cleansing, energizing.
- β-Pinene & γ-Terpinene → antimicrobial, refreshing.
- Citral (Neral + Geranial) → antibacterial, lemon aroma.
👉 The high limonene makes lemon oil excellent for cosmetic cleansing and uplifting aromatherapy, but also prone to oxidation (should be stored in dark glass, away from heat).
🔹 Uses in Cosmetics & Personal Care
1. Skin Care
- Brightening & clarifying → helps even out dull or oily skin.
- Antimicrobial → supports acne-prone skin (when diluted).
- Often used in cleansers, toners, scrubs, and soaps.
Note: Lemon oil is phototoxic – it increases skin sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid sun/UV exposure for 12–24 hours after applying to the skin.
2. Hair Care
- Helps reduce scalp oiliness and dandruff.
- Used in shampoos, conditioners, and scalp oils for a fresh, clean scent.
3. Aromatherapy / Wellness
- Fresh, citrusy aroma boosts mood, reduces mental fatigue, and enhances focus.
- Common in massage oils, bath products, and body sprays.
4. Cosmetic Formulations
- Used for fragrance in lotions, perfumes, deodorants, and soaps.
- Provides a natural “clean” scent for eco-friendly and organic cosmetics.
🔹 Safety Guidelines
- Dilution required: 0.5–2% in topical applications (3–12 drops per 30 mL carrier oil).
- Phototoxicity: avoid direct sunlight/UV exposure after application.
- Storage: keep in a cool, dark place to prevent oxidation (oxidized oils can cause skin irritation).
- Children & sensitive skin: use mild dilutions.
🔹 Cosmetic Grade vs. Food Grade
- Cosmetic Grade → standardized for topical use, skin-safe, not for ingestion.
- Food Grade → tested and approved for safe consumption (used as a flavoring).
