Lemon Grass Essential Oil
Lemongrass essential oil is a powerful antimicrobial, deodorizer, and insect repellent with a refreshing citrus-grassy aroma. It’s excellent for cleaning blends, diffusers, and skincare (when diluted), but should be used with caution due to potential skin irritation.
🔹 Lemongrass Essential Oil
- Extracted from the fresh or partly dried leaves of Cymbopogon citratus or Cymbopogon flexuosus (tropical grasses).
- Obtained via steam distillation.
- Has a fresh, sharp, citrusy, slightly grassy aroma (less sweet than lemon).
- Commonly grown in India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and tropical regions.
🔹 Chemical Composition (Typical Profile)
- Citral (65–85%) → antimicrobial, antifungal, lemon-like scent.
- Geraniol → antiseptic, soothing.
- Limonene → uplifting, antioxidant.
- Myrcene & Nerol → calming, anti-inflammatory.
👉 High citral content makes it especially strong as an antimicrobial and insect repellent.
🔹 Uses & Benefits
1. Aromatherapy
- Refreshing & energizing → helps fight fatigue and mental fog.
- Stress-reducing → supports relaxation and focus.
- Purifies the air when diffused.
2. Topical / Cosmetic
- Antimicrobial & antifungal → useful for acne, athlete’s foot, or minor infections (when diluted).
- Astringent → helps with oily skin and tightening pores.
- Haircare → sometimes added to scalp treatments for dandruff control.
Skin caution: Can irritate if not diluted properly (stronger than lavender or lemon oils).
3. Household Uses
- Natural insect repellent → repels mosquitoes and pests.
- Air freshener/deodorizer → removes unpleasant odors.
- Cleaning agent → antibacterial, useful in natural cleaning sprays.
4. Culinary (Food-Grade Only)
- Used sparingly in Asian cuisine for flavoring soups, teas, and curries (lemongrass herb is more common; essential oil must be labeled food-grade to be safe).
🔹 Safety Guidelines
- Dilution required: 0.5–2% dilution (3–12 drops per 30 mL carrier oil).
- Possible skin irritation → always patch test first.
- Not recommended for children under 2.
- Avoid use during pregnancy unless guided by a professional.
🔹 Lemongrass vs. Lemon Essential Oil
- Lemongrass EO → sharper, grassier scent; stronger antimicrobial & insect-repellent properties.
- Lemon EO → sweeter, lighter aroma; uplifting and cleansing but phototoxic on skin.
So, lemongrass is often used in cleaning, pest control, and therapeutic skincare, while lemon oil shines in mood-lifting and cleansing uses.
